No, I*m sorry: The old expansions for the “classic” card game for two players can not be used with “The Rivals for Catan”. Mixing different language versions is usually no problem if all players understand both languages. However, if the back sides of the cards differ, you could easily spot which card might be which – this could be due to a generally backside motif, but even if this is identical between the two editions, there might be a slight deviation due to local production standards. So, long story short: We would recommend against combining different language editions of the same game.

I must tell that I’m a little confuse…
Can I use the old expansions with the new «rivals for catan»?
And can I mix french and english versions of the old version?!
Help me please!

I’m a fan of the card game, but also think the game duration is a bit too long. Do you have info about the release date for Die Fürsten von Catan ? And about a French release (Filosofia ?) Thanks !

@Tom: Since it is a quite new game it makes no sense to add an “upgrade” for the old game. Als Klaus has written, new cards have been added which had been necessary to make the new game playable. Also some cards of the old game have been changed in function and properties. Therefore this reform is not comparable with the “little” reform in 2003, for which in Germany some new textboxes for old cards could be downloaded and by Mayfair the Barbarian & Traders Upgrade Kit was published.

This sounds like a very thoughtful and well executed re-implementation of an already successful game, and I think that the changes you have described will make the game leaner and more satisfying.

That said, the changes sound pretty scoped, and I wonder if there will be instructions for existing owners of the game to play with the new rules. Is an “upgrade” being considered for existing customers, or a new set of runes for playing the old game with the new rules?

I’m excited, I guess, for a new version of the Card game….. I own 2 complete sets of the Card game, with all expansions. We play full verson of Cities & Knights almost every weekend with friends, but when we have a small group we sometimes play the Card game, we even have played with both sets and 4 players (changing up some rules as we go to make it work).

My “I guess” is that now I have to decide whether to buy a new set for the new, and hopefully, better experience.

Good luck and I am excited to see the results.

(I also purchased a tin-can German Version, for the container and figurines)
